We have recently encountered instances of organisations that are unsure about how to select the correct ABA code when registering a machine. One particular question is, should machines be registered according to their weight or capacity?
Workplace transport equipment should always be registered according to the rated (base) capacity of the machine. Where weights (such as 5 tonnes, 15 tonnes, etc) are referred to in the ABA Workplace Transport Groupings, this always relates to a truck’s capacity, not its weight.
Understanding this and selecting the correct ABA code is crucial. It is the only way to accurately record which category of machine was covered by operator training. Registering training with a code based on rated capacity ensures consistency across documentation and avoids discrepancies.
Importantly, it also helps companies to ensure their training programs are compliant with regulations, industry standards, and best practice. Correctly categorising and managing machines from the outset also helps save time and improve accuracy. It also enables tracking of training efficacy over time.
The right codes help ensure that operators are receiving training on the appropriate type of equipment, helping to minimise the risk of accidents or misuse. The correct codes further support safety, by ensuring safety protocols are followed for the specific equipment category.
Consistently and correctly using ABA codes supports better safety, efficiency, and compliance in workplace transport operations.
We encourage organisations to review their current practices to ensure machines are registered based on capacity across all parts of the operation. The full list of Workplace Transport Groupings and codes are here.
